Crunch Time

It’s crunch time at jhP! We’re working feverishly to get our booth together for the Chamber Business Expo on Tuesday, October 27. Even Accounts Payable is feeling the pinch. Some of the partners are foregoing breakfast in order to have enough time in the day, while others are harnessing their “super powers” to get the job done!

We can be as creative and as outlandish as we want to when we work on our own self-promotion and this year’s Chamber Expo booth will be no exception. We would’t simply dream up a theme, put out some brochures and call it good. No, we have to design a booth that will captivate and inspire attendees, educate them on our multitude of marketing services and then deliver the creative juice that leaves them wanting more! That’s a tall order. I’m not sure even Superman could fill those shoes…

We promise to wet your marketing and advertising appetite with our tasty display. Visit us at the Chamber Business Expo on Tuesday, October 27 from 1 pm to 5 pm at the Ramada Inn.

Washburn, Washburn, we love thee well!

jhpfamilyportraitThis week marks the kick-off of Homecoming 2009 at Washburn University. It will be a week filled with fun activities, exciting sporting events, and the reunion of alums who will reminisce about the good ol’ days at Washburn. Being the alma mater of many on the jhP team, and/or near and dear to the hearts of all, we’re proudly getting caught up in the fun-filled Homecoming festivities.

To join in the fun, we’d like you to drop us a line with your favorite memories about Washburn. To help you get started, please allow us to share a few of our favorite W.U. reminiscences.

“I love going to the Mulvane Art Fair. I enjoy looking at all the creative work and listening to some great music. I look forward to the event year after year.” – Mindy Armstrong

“I have a lot of favorite memories about Washburn, some of which go back to my childhood and watching basketball games in the old gym! What  stands out in my recent memories, are the great Washburn students that have gone through our internship program. I have really been impressed at how prepared they are to jump right in to assignments!” – Linda Bull

“I have great memories of my time at Washburn. But now, more importantly, I am very excited to have my son living in the dorm and enjoying campus life while getting a great education at Washburn.” – Michelle Cuevas-Stubblefield

“My fondest memories of Washburn aren’t just specific events or moments. Instead, I appreciate the lasting friendships that were formed with some of the staff and faculty. I also enjoyed the opportunity to anchor the Washburn TV news and participate in the study abroad program.” – Dustin Dean

“I love going to the Mulvane Art Fair, and I enjoy just walking around the campus. One of my favorite scenes is in the winter when the fountain freezes and the lights twinkle off the ice.” – Linda Eisenhut

“As a fairly new resident of Topeka I am continually impressed by the culture at Washburn. I love spending time at the Mulvane Art Museum, and have enjoyed SO many events held at W.U. – most recently the Race Against Breast Cancer’s 5k. It’s great to have their students, faculty and staff so involved in our community!” – Brie Engelken

“My wife and I both attended Washburn in the early ’80s and very much enjoyed our time there. We have been quite impressed with the dramatic changes on campus in recent years. Now our oldest son, a WU junior in psychology, is getting the benefits of those improvements.” – Kurt Eskilson

“My fine arts professors at Washburn gave me a high level of support and encouragement that I probably wouldn’t have received at a larger school. My time at W.U. helped me build my knowledge and love of the arts and was a great foundation for continuing into graduate studies.” – Gary Jones

“I’ll never forget when the Lady Blues beat the defending champions, the Tampa Spartans, during the quarterfinals of the 2007 NCAA Division II National Championship. It was a great feeling to see the Lady Blues do so well.” – Angie Marquart

“My father was a Washburn grad and a former athlete so my memories of Washburn go back to when I was just old enough to attend all of the WU basketball games with my parents. I continued to attend all the basketball games during my time at Washburn and even now manage to make it to several each year. My husband and his father are also both Washburn graduates (and they are from Long Island).” – Leslie Palace

“I loved walking through campus in the fall, admiring all of the sculptures. As a Washburn art major, I thought it was pretty cool that W.U. had a whole new collection on display each year.” – Alissa Sheley

“Washburn holds a lot of fond memories for me. My son was 18 months-old when I graduated.  When they started to play Pomp and Circumstance at the graduation ceremony, he thought Barney from the children’s show was about to come on the stage. He then proceeded to scream for Barney during the ceremony. It was quite hysterical for everyone in the stands. I also met my husband at a WU football game.” – Tracey Stratton

Meet Our Intern: Sarah

SarahSimsName: Sarah Sims
School: Washburn University
Year: Senior
Major: Marketing and Finance
Hometown: Berryton, Kansas
My First Week: August 15th

Learned anything about the industry?
I’ve learned SO much about the industry in the last four weeks. I hadn’t had any experience working in an agency before, but I knew I was interested in working in a creative and professional environment. I love the fact that every day is completely different from the day before, so it’s nearly impossible to get bored.

No really, why advertising/marketing? What happened to make you crazy enough to consider this!?!
Being the exciting, spontaneous person that I am, I changed my major at least a dozen times since starting college. From accounting to architecture, interior design to nursing, a special agent for the FBI to even considering a career as a celebrity make-up artist, I finally found my niche in the marketing field. I really enjoyed doing consulting projects with clients for some of my marketing classes, and I also liked the creative, advertising side of this field.

Why do you LOVE jhP (because we all love compliments :P )
I love working at jhP because everyone here has been so welcoming, positive and fun to be around. Everyone seems to know to take their jobs seriously, but not themselves – which makes for a great place to work. I have been able to learn so much in a short time because of the variety of clients and all of the projects going on, as well as the willingness of everyone to share their own knowledge and experience.

Activities/Interests/Hobbies:
Some of my favorite things to do are travel, shop, read, go on spontaneous trips with my friends, have theme nights and play tennis. I LOVE the mountains and going hiking, rock climbing and snowboarding (although not very successfully).

Favorite Quote:
“For a long time it seemed to me that life was about to begin – real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life. This perspective has helped me to see there is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way. So treasure every moment you have and remember that time waits for no one. Happiness is a journey, not a destination.” Alfred D. Souza

About you:
I am a sociable, easy-going, random and optimistic person. I tend to change my mind quite often, and if you ask me, I would be happy to tell you about my new and exciting plan for my life that particular day. My favorite food is sushi, and I’d eat dessert every day for every meal if it were socially acceptable.

Meet Our Intern: Angie

angieName: Angie Marquart
School: Washburn University
Year: Senior
Major: Marketing and Advertising
Hometown: Scranton, Kan.
My First Week: I was so nervous I could hardly speak to anyone.

Why jhP?
I wanted to work in an agency setting where I could learn about advertising as it pertains to a variety of business models. jhP stood out in my mind because of its successes and emphasis on the employees as a team.

Learned anything about the industry?
The industry is always changing!  I learn new things every day about online components, and the daily brick-and-mortar functions. Do I get extra points for using textbook terminology?

That work environment’s crazy!!! Surprised?
Yes and no. I learned to deal with constant deadlines and immediate needs during my last internship, but it was completely different. At jhP, we work with a number of clients, so we have to be on top of the needs and wants of each organization. It’s pretty intense!

No really, why advertising/marketing? What happened to you to make you crazy enough to consider this!?!
When I was 15 years old, my FBLA sponsor told me that someone needed to do a sales presentation, and that someone was me. I “sold” Viactiv calcium supplements and fell in love with the “ah ha” moment when a look of complete understanding crosses the client’s face. I get a rush when I can deliver research, ideas and a marketing process that will set a business on the road to success. There are few better feelings.

So I hear graduation makes you a big kid – any “career goals” (oooohhhh ahhhhhh)?
After graduation, I will earn a position as an account executive, preferably at an advertising agency. Later in life, I would like earn a position in community relations for the American Cancer Society.

Why do you LOVE jhP (because we all love compliments :P )
At jhP, partnership is more than a concept. I am a member of a team that supports and encourages one another, and that partnership is strongly represented in the client relationships. jhP stands out as one group who accomplishes innovative, creative advertising that meets the needs and wants of their clients. I find this extremely inspiring because I’m geeky like that!

So you’re the intern – bet you have to get a lot of coffee right? What could make your life better/improve your job/enhance your experience/make you feel less like the gopher that interns typically feel like?
Well, today was the first day I have ever made coffee, and let me stress ever!  But it was for a client. I don’t feel like an intern at jhP. Under the supervision of an account manager, I have been given responsibilities and tasks that any employee would be likely to perform. For me, internships are opportunities to soak up the industry. One of the best ways to learn is through observation. That said, I would love to participate in brainstorming sessions or sit in during client meetings.

Activities/Interests/Hobbies:
When I can find the time, I like to read, write and draw. I probably own five coloring books and a ridiculously wide assortment of coloring utensils!  I break out my Super Nintendo at least once a week. Super Nintendo is where my video game skills max out!

Favorite Quote:
Advertising Quote:  “Doing business without advertising is like winking at a girl in the dark.  You know what you are doing, but nobody else does.” – Steuart Henderson Britt
General Quote:  “A great leader’s courage to fulfill his vision comes from passion, not position.” – John Maxwell

About you:
My name is Angela Paige, aka Angie. I’m 22 years old, and I’m going to graduate with a bachelor’s in Advertising and Marketing in December. I was raised by two teachers who were super strict, but taught me the value of education. My parents are a huge part of my successes. They encouraged me to do all that I could and be all that I am (cheesy, right?). However, I still grew up in a very small town. And in a small town you hear a lot about the impossibilities of life. I learned how to harness other people’s objections and negativity, so I could turn it into strength and drive. The best way to inspire me is to tell me that you don’t think I can do something. Not only will I accomplish my goal, but I’ll send you a thank you card!

Life to me isn’t about the things that may, at some point, possibly, hopefully happen. Life is about making a decision to set a goal and execute because that is what may, at some point, possibly, hopefully make you successful in whatever it is that you want to do.

jhP Extreme Makeover

It’s not a reality show but it felt like it! In record time the jhP staff overhauled the office for a National ADDY celebration party! The makeover consisted of major cleaning, painting, track light installation and hanging art. All members of the jhP team created the art displayed throughout the office and we now ooze creativity more than ever – so MOVE THAT BUS for a slideshow of the makeover!

Insight from the ADDY Winners

Earlier we told you how jhP was in consideration for an American Advertising Federation National ADDY Award for the illustration “Paper Dali,” created to promote the Mulvane Art Museum’s Mountain/Plains Art Fair. At last Saturday night’s National Conference ADDY Show, Dan Billen and Gary Jones received a Silver ADDY on behalf of jones huyett Partners -– the highest honor awarded in the category! This was the first jhP piece to win national recognition from the AAF. Here’s what Dan and Gary had to say:

Dan Billen, in an email from the hotel after the ADDY show Saturday night:

I’m sitting in the hotel room with Gary trying to come down from a pretty big night. We won a Silver ADDY for Illustration, and – because the awards are based on a point system, not by rank – there wasn’t a Gold ADDY given in that category. That puts us at the top of the nation!

There were about 50 tables and several hundred people at the award show. It was a packed house! I did my best to represent jhP with a bright orange tie and orange Converse shoes to match (that was a real crowd pleaser). We dined on huge steaks and watched as people were called up on stage to accept their awards. Pretty soon it was jones huyett Partners’ turn, and Gary and I went up in front of what seemed like an ocean of people to get our award. I felt like a rock star (again!).

Gary Jones, on the ADDY Award-winning project, after returning to the office Monday morning:

The Mulvane Art Museum, which is part of Washburn University, was our client on this project. I serve on the Friends of the Mulvane Art Museum Board of Directors, and jhP works on the advertising for the Mountain Plains Art Fair, one of the big fundraising projects for the museum. Each year I work with our creative staff to come up with a fresh, new look for the fundraiser.

This year’s goal was to select an artist who personified creativity. I suggested Salvador Dali, remembered for his flamboyant mustache and wild eyebrows. Dali was highly imaginative and looked at things in a surreal and grandiose manner. His work was just as striking and bizarre. Our mission was to create an illustration that captured Dali’s energy in a fresh, exciting way. Dan’s personal collage work made me think he could collage a portrait of Dali. With little direction, Dan created the image and it was clearly a winner. We used the illustration on everything (billboards, banners, posters, flyers, postcards, tickets, T-shirts and TV) and the response was fantastic! Some people knew immediately who he was, and others just liked him because he looked so outrageuos and fun.

Receiving a National ADDY award for the piece solidified our confidence that the ‘Paper Dali’ illustration is world-class work. We are thrilled to bring national exposure to Washburn University and the Mulvane Art Museum. jhP has always appreciated the value of supporting the arts, and we’re proud to help children learn through Mulvane Art Museum programs. Topeka is a great place to live and learn about the arts.

Congratulations Dan and Gary! Everyone at jhP is very proud of you for being recognized as among the best in the country and bringing honor to the excellent work our creative team produces every day!

Twitters and Beer

Keeping up with the critical changes in today’s digital media landscape can be overwhelming. But the jhP philosophy is: With a few good friends and a cold brew we can do anything.

Friday, April 10, jhP launched a new educational forum for clients and friends, tied to our famous Beer-30 festivities. Starting at 4:00pm, an enthusiastic flock joined us for our inaugural “Twitter Tips Beer-30.” The education session covered the basics of Twitter, a rapidly growing social networking phenomenon.

In an informal hour, we discussed what it means to follow, tweet, retweet, reply and repeat – highlighting the importance of Twitter in today’s business world. The fellowship was fun, the beer was tasty, and everyone took away a better understanding of Twitter and social media planning.

Such valuable good times must be repeated. We’ll soon host more Beer-30 educational forums about Twitter and other hot digital media topics. Check back soon for dates and times. Better yet, sign up for our email blasts so you’ll know immediately!

All Aboard the Orangeland Express!

All Aboard!!!!! In celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, jhP team members competed in the first annual Great Topeka Bed Race, sponsored by Housing & Credit Counseling Inc.

jhP determined early in the planning stages to do what we do best – be creative! Our theme was the Orangeland Express – to highlight our brand and Topeka’s history of being a railroad city. With the entire team on board we quickly created a train out of our bed with a fully functioning smoke stack that blew orange smoke.

A good time was had by all as our locomotive rolled along the parade route in downtown Topeka.

Monday: My New Favorite Day

SaraWhy dreaded Monday, you ask? Because on Mondays I intern at jhP!

Every Monday is different, and each has been fascinating. I’m mostly interested in market research and account service, and in the scant eight Mondays I’ve been here I’ve had the chance to work on several different projects. Plus I’ve joined in brainstorming sessions, which are more fun than should be allowed during work hours. Even my forays into fabulous filing have been fascinating; who knew how much behind-the-scenes paperwork goes into every ad?

Being an intern at jhP is a wonderful first venture into the office world, let alone marketing. Up ‘til now my work experience has been in the nursing field, so I was nervous about working in such a different environment. But jhP is fantastic! Every person here is as pleasant and fun to work with as I could hope. The place buzzes with creative energy.

I highly recommend jhP for self-starters considering internships. Non-traditional students like me, take heart. Even if you can’t afford to work for free five days a week, call jhP. They might be willing to work something out. I’m glad they worked with me so Mondays could become my new favorite day!
