Meet Our Intern: Sarah

SarahSimsName: Sarah Sims

Major: Marketing and Finance
Hometown: Berryton, Kansas
My First Week: August 15th

Learned anything about the industry?
I’ve learned SO much about the industry in the last four weeks. I hadn’t had any experience working in an agency before, but I knew I was interested in working in a creative and professional environment. I love the fact that every day is completely different from the day before, so it’s nearly impossible to get bored.

No really, why advertising/marketing? What happened to make you crazy enough to consider this!?!
Being the exciting, spontaneous person that I am, I changed my major at least a dozen times since starting college. From accounting to architecture, interior design to nursing, a special agent for the FBI to even considering a career as a celebrity make-up artist, I finally found my niche in the marketing field. I really enjoyed doing consulting projects with clients for some of my marketing classes, and I also liked the creative, advertising side of this field.

Why do you LOVE jhP (because we all love compliments :P )
I love working at jhP because everyone here has been so welcoming, positive and fun to be around. Everyone seems to know to take their jobs seriously, but not themselves – which makes for a great place to work. I have been able to learn so much in a short time because of the variety of clients and all of the projects going on, as well as the willingness of everyone to share their own knowledge and experience.

Activities/Interests/Hobbies:
Some of my favorite things to do are travel, shop, read, go on spontaneous trips with my friends, have theme nights and play tennis. I LOVE the mountains and going hiking, rock climbing and snowboarding (although not very successfully).

Favorite Quote:
“For a long time it seemed to me that life was about to begin – real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life. This perspective has helped me to see there is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way. So treasure every moment you have and remember that time waits for no one. Happiness is a journey, not a destination.” Alfred D. Souza

About you:
I am a sociable, easy-going, random and optimistic person. I tend to change my mind quite often, and if you ask me, I would be happy to tell you about my new and exciting plan for my life that particular day. My favorite food is sushi, and I’d eat dessert every day for every meal if it were socially acceptable.

Money Can’t Buy You Love, Even in Social Media

money-cant-buy-loveLast week an Australian company, USocial, launched a new offering to the social media world. For $177.30 you can purchase a 1,000-member group of “targeted” Fans for your company’s Facebook Fan Page, up to 10,000 fans. However, by “targeted” USocial merely means that these fans reside in the country you do business in and/or are affiliated with your industry or interest group.

Suffice it to say, USocial missed the mark. The entire purpose of social media is to create and strengthen relationships. How can a bond exist between an organization and 1,000 Fans who have simply been “purchased”? It’s even questionable whether the Fans are actual people or automated accounts that would be worthless to your business. You can’t buy relationships – at least not the useful kind.

From there, the facts behind USocial get even fuzzier. Although USocial argues that your bulk purchase of Fans will be targeted, their ability to target is extremely limited. If your brand’s audience is a specific demographic in Northeast Kansas, obtaining 1,000 Fans from across the United States is nearly useless. Futhermore, USocial claims it’s common knowledge that each Fan will generate at least $1 in monthly profits. However, they offer no evidence to support this unlikely statement.

And for anyone who might still be considering USocial, consider the stance of Twitter and Digg. When USocial set up similar business offerings on these networks, both sites moved to ban USocial. Despite those demands to cease and desist, USocial continues to run its business.

Meet Our Intern: Angie

angieName: Angie Marquart
School: Washburn University
Year: Senior
Major: Marketing and Advertising
Hometown: Scranton, Kan.
My First Week: I was so nervous I could hardly speak to anyone.

Why jhP?
I wanted to work in an agency setting where I could learn about advertising as it pertains to a variety of business models. jhP stood out in my mind because of its successes and emphasis on the employees as a team.

Learned anything about the industry?
The industry is always changing!  I learn new things every day about online components, and the daily brick-and-mortar functions. Do I get extra points for using textbook terminology?

That work environment’s crazy!!! Surprised?
Yes and no. I learned to deal with constant deadlines and immediate needs during my last internship, but it was completely different. At jhP, we work with a number of clients, so we have to be on top of the needs and wants of each organization. It’s pretty intense!

No really, why advertising/marketing? What happened to you to make you crazy enough to consider this!?!
When I was 15 years old, my FBLA sponsor told me that someone needed to do a sales presentation, and that someone was me. I “sold” Viactiv calcium supplements and fell in love with the “ah ha” moment when a look of complete understanding crosses the client’s face. I get a rush when I can deliver research, ideas and a marketing process that will set a business on the road to success. There are few better feelings.

So I hear graduation makes you a big kid – any “career goals” (oooohhhh ahhhhhh)?
After graduation, I will earn a position as an account executive, preferably at an advertising agency. Later in life, I would like earn a position in community relations for the American Cancer Society.

Why do you LOVE jhP (because we all love compliments :P )
At jhP, partnership is more than a concept. I am a member of a team that supports and encourages one another, and that partnership is strongly represented in the client relationships. jhP stands out as one group who accomplishes innovative, creative advertising that meets the needs and wants of their clients. I find this extremely inspiring because I’m geeky like that!

So you’re the intern – bet you have to get a lot of coffee right? What could make your life better/improve your job/enhance your experience/make you feel less like the gopher that interns typically feel like?
Well, today was the first day I have ever made coffee, and let me stress ever!  But it was for a client. I don’t feel like an intern at jhP. Under the supervision of an account manager, I have been given responsibilities and tasks that any employee would be likely to perform. For me, internships are opportunities to soak up the industry. One of the best ways to learn is through observation. That said, I would love to participate in brainstorming sessions or sit in during client meetings.

Activities/Interests/Hobbies:
When I can find the time, I like to read, write and draw. I probably own five coloring books and a ridiculously wide assortment of coloring utensils!  I break out my Super Nintendo at least once a week. Super Nintendo is where my video game skills max out!

Advertising Quote:  “Doing business without advertising is like winking at a girl in the dark.  You know what you are doing, but nobody else does.” – Steuart Henderson Britt
General Quote:  “A great leader’s courage to fulfill his vision comes from passion, not position.” – John Maxwell

About you:
My name is Angela Paige, aka Angie. I’m 22 years old, and I’m going to graduate with a bachelor’s in Advertising and Marketing in December. I was raised by two teachers who were super strict, but taught me the value of education. My parents are a huge part of my successes. They encouraged me to do all that I could and be all that I am (cheesy, right?). However, I still grew up in a very small town. And in a small town you hear a lot about the impossibilities of life. I learned how to harness other people’s objections and negativity, so I could turn it into strength and drive. The best way to inspire me is to tell me that you don’t think I can do something. Not only will I accomplish my goal, but I’ll send you a thank you card!

Life to me isn’t about the things that may, at some point, possibly, hopefully happen. Life is about making a decision to set a goal and execute because that is what may, at some point, possibly, hopefully make you successful in whatever it is that you want to do.
